Description
Tropica - floss-silk tree (chorisia speciosa) - 10 seedsworth knowing: the summer-green plant belongs to the cotton-tree family and can be kept as a tub plant. While other trees shed their leaves during autumn, the floss-silk tree produces beautiful about 15 cm sized leaves of salmon pink colour and wine-red flowers. Striking as well are its many thorns growing out of the trunk. Origin: the plant is native in south america but is nowadays also grown in many parks of the mediterranean sea. Propagation: seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. Rough the seeds with sand paper and soak them in room-water for 12 hours afterwards. Then place the seeds 1 cm deep in moist seed starting soil. Given a temperature of 22 to 25°c the germination should follow in as little as 2 or 4 weeks. Place / light: the floss-silk tree likes bright to full sunny places. Even the hottest place isn't hot enough for it. Care: the tree can be planted in standard soil and should be watered plentifully during spring and summer. The soil may as well dry out now and then. Supply the plant with tub plant fertilizer once every week from april until october. Pruning promotes the branching. During autumn, while flowers appear and while the plant loses its leaves, water considerably less. Winter period: do not overwinter the plant below 12°c.
